While configuring a few servers I noticed some strange behavior with mode 4 channel bonding (LACP / 802.3ad) and DHCP. You might get the following error message, no matter what you do:

Determining IP information for bond0… failed; no link present. Check cable?

The problem appears to exist in how the interface responds to link status on LACP / 802.3ad ports. The computer is trying to send DHCP packets when the interface itself isn’t ready, causing Linux to think the interface isn’t configured or has no network cable plugged in. This appears to only happen when you use mode 4 channel bonding. Mode 6 works fine. The (band-aid) solution appears to be to trick the system into thinking the interface is already configured. This enables Linux to continue sending DHCP packets until the interface is configured and negotiated successfully with 802.3ad, at which point everything works as planned. Simply insert this at the end of /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-bond0 - I should note this particular example is for CentOS and RHEL so I haven’t confirmed if this workaround works for Debian based distributions.

check_link_down () { return 1; }

Honestly when i bought them I didn’t know they were shipping from an hour where I lived. I wound up buying it at Amazon here.

Its nice, came in a smallish box that wasn’t packed too well by Amazon. The Bodum box was squished to one side of the box with no packaging around it.

Bodum themselves only packed the cups in bubble wrap. It did the job; everything arrived in once piece amidst the horror stories of people recieving broken cups. 2 cups per box.

One thing I noticed was how they proudly proclaim that they are “handmade by expert artisans” but there’s a sticker on the bottom of the box that says “Made in China”. I find that hard to believe that they’re handmade; their disclaimer that claims slight irregularities from being handmade might be a ploy to disguise that they were mass produced in a cheap factory with bad quality control. Due to their slightly expensive price (~$30) they had better hold up.

They feel amazingly light when you pick them up; they give the impression that it is made of plexi-glass until you give it a slight flick, at which point it sounds nicely to remind you that it is, indeed, glass. They also feel amazing delicate; I doubt their claims that you can stick it in the dishwasher, which was how my other mug met its untimely death.

Coffee mugs. Really, why is it so hard to make a decent coffee mug? All I want is a clean looking simple design that has a handle firmly attached, and a nice quality thermal construction. Well, I’m an engineer, an unemployed one at that so I’ve come up with an idea to get my ideal “dream mug”, if you will.

What I want is simple. I just need a simple cylindrical design, properly insulated, and built with no seams or edges where water can collect. Ideally, it would be a double walled vacuum sealed stainless steel mug with a welded handle.

Simple, no place for water to collect, and the welded seam where the handle meets the body is stronger than the metal on the body. Vacuum sealing is important, it isn’t properly done on modern coffee mugs because the process is probably too expensive or labor intensive. Whatever, put a fitting on the bottom so I can

properly vacuum out the mug myself.

For the years I was in college [ERAU] I was using a mug I picked up at a Star Trek convention while in high school. It was a simple mug with a neat ring stamped on it that said “FEDERATION OF PLANETS”. It made me feel special, though while washing it I dropped it in the sink and the handle broke off. @)$%)! well it still works, it just doesn’t have a handle anymore. Also, the holes in the double wall where the handles go, are, well holes. Every time I wash the mug a little water gets in between the double walls and makes a neat sloshing sound. Also, I can never quite get all the water back out. Ugh, besides being unhygienic, it’s also an eyesore. I tried to epoxy it back on, but it didn’t survive another trip though the dishwasher. Fine, I give up.

After graduating, I moved back in with my parents while applying left and right for a job. I raided the cabinets and found a neat stainless Eddie-Bauer mug with a dull red finish. That served me well for about a month. After another trip through the dishwasher, the paint was flaking off, leaving me with a half-molted mug that kind of looks a bit like two-face. I’ve had it with cheap mugs, so last night I went on a little escapade with the internet to find a replacement that will last. So I go where anyone goes when they need advice, IRC. No? Okay, maybe just me.

atom001: Hey @earlmred I need a nice mug because I’m tired of replacing mine every few months

Mr. Earlmred then goes on to recommend me a few nice titanium mugs, but they’re all camping mugs that are paper thing, expensive, and use a coathanger for a handle. Hmm, time to look elsewhere.

Google searching for “nice stainless steel mug” brought me to this link where I found a beautiful stainless steel mug. Okay, its not vacuum sealed, nor is the handle welded on, but its the closest I could find to an ideal solution. It looks nice to boot. I like that simple cylindrical look.

Amazon sells it for $25 here, but the reviews are kind of worrying. There are reports of the handle breaking off, that its too small, or that it feels cheap. Well, its better than anything I have right now, at least the results on Single Serve Coffee are positive.

Other glasses on that site caught my eye, especially the Bodum glass mugs here. They also feature a simple elegant design, but the most unique feature is their double wall insulating construction. Its a double walled insulated glass! As much as I like it, there are tons of reviews saying they arrived broken. I wish there was a local retailer that I could buy them at.

So I thought the simple installation of HandBrake would go smoothly on a Linux server I was working on. All I needed to do was download the pre-compiled binary and it would work since it was compiled for Intel and the server was a quad core Intel right? Not so, since the server was running an old version of Red Hate Enterprise Server, version 4 to be exact, there were library issues all over the place. Simply put, there was no way to get HandBrake on there unless I was compiling it from source.

I thought that would go smoothly, but again problems abound. Required packages like yasm and nasm were missing, and when I installed them with up2date the compile still failed! The error I encountered was this mess:

   ./configure –prefix=$CONTRIB –enable-gpl –enable-pthreads –enable-swscale \

        –disable-shared –enable-static –disable-encoders \
–enable-encoder=mpeg4 –enable-encoder=ac3 –enable-encoder=snow \
–enable-libfaad –disable-ffmpeg –disable-ffserver \
–disable-muxers –enable-muxer=ipod –disable-bsfs \
–extra-cflags=”-I$CONTRIB/include” \
–extra-ldflags=”-L$CONTRIB/lib”  &&
make && make install &&
strip -S $CONTRIB/lib/libavcodec.a

…failed LibAvCodec ./lib/libavcodec.a …
…skipped ./lib/libavformat.a for lack of ./lib/libavcodec.a…
…skipped ./lib/libswscale.a for lack of ./lib/libavcodec.a…
…skipped 3 target(s)…
make[1]: *** [.contrib] Error 1
make: *** [contrib/.contrib] Error 2

Turns out this was another problem with library incompadability with Red Hat Enterprise Server 4, this time with how FFmpeg works with Video4Linux. The solution, thank you Google was simply to disable Video4Linux support on this particular build of FFmpeg within HandBrake. Here lies another problem, each time HandBrake was compiled from source with the “make” command, it extracts a fresh copy from a downloaded archive and compiles that. Making changes to the configure file of the extracted version doesn’t do anything because it gets overwritten on the next build. I had to track down the command with the help of the grep command by help of a friend tutorial. The offending file was in contribs/Jamfile – at line 112 insert “–disable-demuxer=v4l –disable-demuxer=v4l2″. Run “make” again, and bang, I get my own copy of HandBrakeCLI for the server. After getting my video file in and setting the profile to produce a video file that will play on my Palm Centro (here is the command line for those interested – “-t 1 -c 1 -f mp4 -w 320 -e ffmpeg -b 256 -2 -a 1 -E faac -B 80 -R 44.1 -6 stereo -D 1 -v”) I hit the enter key and prepare myself to bask in the glory of a video file encoding on a quad-core hyper-threading server.

Instead all I get at the end is a long dump of:

[NULL @ 0x1166860]insufficient thread locking around avcodec_open/close()
